Indian CEO - Americans "Unemployable"
Take yourself back for a minute. Imagine you are in the 1960's, during the civil rights movement. Now imagine that some corporation in the United States said in a public speech all Blacks are unemployable simply because they are.....black. Now what would that be?
Today we have this:
Top Indian CEO: Most American Grads Are ‘Unemployable’.
Vineet Nayar, the highly respected CEO of HCL Technologies, one of India's hottest IT services vendors, was speaking this morning in New York City to an audience of about 50 customers and partners when he related a recent experience with an education official in a large U.S. state.
The official wanted to know why HCL, a $2.5 billion (revenue) company with more than 3,000 people across 21 offices in 15 states, wasn't hiring more people in his state. Vineet's short answer: because most American college grads are "unemployable."
The article tries to smooth over this brazen racism against Americans by trying to put in all in context. Think of the 1960's again and the civil rights movement. Wasn't this the same game white racists played in trying to justify hiring discrimination against black people? Wasn't this the same pack of sexist lies to deny women management positions?
Is sure is!
Check out these racist assumptions made by Nayar:
Many American grads looking to enter the tech field are preoccupied with getting rich, Vineet said. They're far less inclined than students from developing countries like India, China, Brazil, South Africa, and Ireland to spend their time learning the "boring" details of tech process, methodology, and tools--ITIL, Six Sigma, and the like.
As a result, Vineet said, most Americans are just too expensive to train--despite the Indian IT industry's reputation for having the most exhaustive boot camps in the world.
What a load of caca! How's that for bi-lingual!
Look at the assumptions! The prejudice!
We're all just too lazy and greedy? What a crock. Vineet claims we need to globalize the American Dream
Globalization is a code word for stealing the American Dream and offshore outsourcing it.
This guy should be deported or sued for brazen discrimination against Americans and in their own country to boot!
Are Americans Really Too Lazy and Greedy to be Employed?
Or are they too smart to work in sweatshop like conditions? Vineet Nayar the CEO of India technology company HCL Technologies does not give employment opportunities to Americans because he says the are lazy and greedy. He adds that Americans are too costly to train. Why would this man say such things about America's educated youth? Here is a man that represents a company that relies on the American dollar to succeed. One would think, he'd be gracious toward America for providing opportunities for him and his country to develop into a strong first world country. A country that has a huge poor population and very small middle class. A country that suffers from a unsafe infrastructure.
A little humble pie is in order for this man.
Today's American youth is eager to claim their piece of the pie. They have witnessed their parents financial stability crumble under the wakening of Globalization. They were traumatized by the attack on their country's soil on 9/11. They know the odds are against them in today's huge labor pool. But they are strong and determined to not give up, to not give in. They understand that freedom is everything and to given up freedom is to give in to death. They ask for no special treatment. Simply, the opportunity.
HCL Technologies is not willing to extend an opportunity to the American citizen. The American is better off this way.
excellent point
exactly what is the starting salary at HCL Technologies in the United States and what is the benefits package and the average salary? Are they trying to reclaim H-1B and L-1 Visa processing fees from their foreign guest workers?
Follow the money!
HCL America
I just quit the only job in my area after one month of working for HCL America. I had been unemployed for 10 months and they contracted me through another Indian outfit called BTech, in Fremont Calif. I am a technical writer with an ambiguous name. I got an offer through the mail before anyone spoke to me. After they called and heard my female voice they reduced the offer by 6 dollars/hr.
When I arrived at a virtually empty 500 person building (funded by state tax credits from the stimulus package) they had hired two males to do the same job as me. One wasn't even a writer but a QA guy. I found out quickly that they were being paid 45% more than I was although I had was training them, solving problems over their heads, and producing the most work. When I raised the issue with both sides of my contract I was called a trouble maker and told that I was considered a junior writer (although I have 20 yrs. experience).
The offsite HCL manager quit responding to my emails about when we could expect to get a printer and the authoring s/w we needed to do our job. She spread the news that I was trouble and promoted the QA guy to go between for her and I.
I worked there for 28 days. When they hired another female she came into the office the first day complaining of the change in compensation and the rudeness of the contracting company. Within two days I was hauled into a room by an IT guy and told I couldn't talk to anyone anymore because I was influencing the new woman. I thought the guy was going to leap over the desk at me when I said he couldn't tell me who I could talk to or what I can talk about, it's my right of free speech. He intimidated me, threatened me, and I couldn't imagine one more day in that environment. I felt like a migrant worker. Three weeks into the job we found out that they didn't plan to pay us for 3 months because HCL didn't pay them for 3 months at a time. I've worked in business for over 25 years for some of the best, IBM, Lucent, Nortel and I have never experienced such a strange, racist, and sexist dysfunctional employer as HCL.
They counted the paper we used to print out our drafts and said we used too much paper, they recorded us with camera's, kept us locked behind mag lock bulletproof glass and after watching the first security tape made a ruling that we could not eat or drink or have personal property or pictures at our desks! We were 5 people alone on the floor!
And I must respond to the assertation that Americans are too lazy and over paid. In one month they never signed the POs we needed to purchase simple things like the software we needed to write manuals and edit CAD/CAM, or the internet, or even telephones on our desks. The PO just kept getting lost. We resorted to bringing in our own wireless laptops and printers and ink and paper and did our job as they continued to call and ask when we would be done. It was a high security project for high security information yet they broke the regulations and allowed us to bring in our lap tops and printers, not to mention thumb drives to share information with each other. We even used our own email accounts to communicate with our manager.
It was very much like I was being used and played as a pawn in their game of getting the most out of people for the least business investment.
Racist? Caste system? Yes, it is here in our new Indian businesses that are forced to hire American citizens to do government work. HCL Industries is a global conglomerate and is spreading an anti-american business practice that feels very corrupt.
wow
One thing, while it's near impossible these days to win a EEOC complaint, with all of that big brother stuff all over the place I'm wondering if a subpoena would actually document what happened to you.
In other words, to prove sex discrimination, age discrimination (and there should be U.S. citizen against discrimination) you have to document it, but maybe they did it for you.
Won't hurt at least to call the EEOC and have them take an input form. You won't get any money out of it be sure but with that kind of treatment....how can it get any worse?
>Are Americans Really Too Lazy and Greedy to be Employed?
Working with Indians in the IT field for over almost 2 decades now has given me insight to this topic. Many denounce the corruption in their own country as a reason why they want to work in the US. These are the same people who state that US business should never offshore to these crooks nor should they trust resumes being presented from India ( as many IT "professionals" are taught a scant amount of skills to pass an interview in what amounts to "garages" ). These are their words, not mine.
They feel that US businesses have a more fair approach to merit increases, market pay scales, management techniques that center more on business than politics, etc. Funny, but this immigrant group feels the same as our own forefathers felt as well. In their homeland ( Italy, Ireland, Germany, you name it ) , the unfairness, politics and corruption pushed them to the greater hope in America. The big difference is that my great-grandparents assimilated the way of life here in the US, learned English and told their children to learn the way of life here so that they can add to the culture and participate in society not detract from it. Now back to the topic...
On to Mr. Vineet Nayar... I think the real reason why he doesn't want to hire Americans has nothing to do what he stated. Sure, it sounds like a convenient excuse and his arogant, abrasive and abrupt answers and attitude is often confused by Americans as someone who surely knows what he's talking about ( and is mostly well-crafted B.S.). The real reason is control. He can easily control more aspects of incomming H1B's than he can of hard-working Americans who know more about the market and are free of encumberances unlike their H1B counterparts. He can control them because they are here tentatively and because of that they behave like indentured servants. Often is the case that they actually are, having to pay off "passage fees" and "visa costs" being footed by their hosts. These hosts are in the form of business owners or consulting firm owners that exploit many of these H1Bs, paying them way under market or not paying them at all. Mr. Nayar is undoubtedly charging market rates for his resources, ( while inflating their abilities to the market ), but has kept a tight lid on his costs through this manner, yielding himself a healthy margin. All done under the legal veil of the H1B program with his resources never uttering a single complaint due to their fear of having their visa and support pulled.
Americans aren't brain-washed by men like Vineet Nayar, and we do eventually figure them out. Our youth comming out of our institutions are remarkably bright, energetic and capable and surprisingly enough stand up for their ideas and rights which scare the hell out of people like Mr. Nayar. He chooses those who will do what he says without question instead of those who will question him and push the limits otherwise known as entrepeneurs. It's his loss and he will ultimately loss in the global trade war...
Respond by reducing immigration
What we think about this is less important than what we DO about it. I say the most effective response with the greatest likelihood of success is to work to control and reduce BOTH legal and illegal immigration. That has the greatest likelihood of success because immigration affects far more jobs and careers than JUST tech!!
What Can We DO About It?
The co-op between our government and business owners in the US have become a strong force. Businesses fill the pockets of our elected officials. Our elected officials make and pass laws that protect the business owner. Other than THROW THE BUMS OUT what can we do?
contact your representatives
Well, firstly speak out and here is a good place for others will find this site and feel encouraged to say something as well.
Then, write your representatives and demand they co-sponsor the Grassley-Durbin bill reforming the H-1B and L-1 Guest worker visas.
Ask others you know to at least join up here. There is no fee for this site and it's just a site, so no serious commitment.
If you want to get more serious then you can join the Programmers Guild, WashTech or Alliance@IBM and you can go to D.C. and personally lobby.
You can write and continue to write, this site gives that capability on what is going on and how outrageous it all is to the U.S. Professional.
Is It Not OUR COUNTRY???!!! Are We AMERICANS Not CAPABLE/WORTHY
...of Working/Work in OUR OWN COUNTRY???!!!
How is it, that FOREIGN NATIONALS are sitting at the desks of AMERICAN citizens, AMERICAN citizens left to flounder in the fetid, fecal matter infused effluence of BIG CORPORATION, BIG GOVERNMENT, and BIG MEDIA?
ASKED AND ANSWERED.
H-1b Visas MUST be IMMEDIATELY suspended – WRONG FOR SO MANY REASONS!
DITTO H-2b, L-1, etc. We MUST first put OUR OWN HOUSE in order, in ALL MATTERS.
Even the "choir" is hesitant/afraid to scream for SUSPENSION given that they would then be deemed unwise and unrealistic.
SUSPENSION – MORATORIUM – The SANE response!!!
this is outrageous
Thanks for exposing this guy.
State and Municipal Projects
Just fyi, Axon Consulting is now owned by HCL. I don't know why they win a lot of State and Municipal projects. Why would our State and Municipalites hire Indian Companies instead of American Companies. Just Weird.
good question
They clearly make those inroads to peddle services to state and local and I often wonder if bribes (oops, campaign contributions) are involved.
There have been various reports of U.S. businesses getting squeezed out from Federal, State, local contracts but the details are something we should look into.
Also, we have these "People with India citizenship only need apply" companies operating in the United States, yet we do not have U.S. companies countering with "only those with U.S. citizenship need apply", who are contract houses, etc. Not unless the DoD requires U.S. citizenship for some large contract due to national security.
State Projects
The State of California is notorious for using h1bs and l1s. They have a tendency of hiring foreign consulting companies even though there are local resources available. Funny though like companies (AIG, Citigroup) these States and Municipalities are bankrupt. Guess it backfired on them and did not help their bottom line.
Invite others to check out noslaves.
You might consider writing forum or blog posts and also link the site around when you see other techies. This is one powerful social networking blog/forum structure but we need more people aware it exists so they start using it.
Glad you're here!
A RICO suit needs to be filed.
The government needs to be named as a codefendent in the suit as well, because they are complicit in the violations of the laws, the discrimination against citizen workers, and their refusal to uphold their oaths of office.
there is a group
trying to challenge this legally, so far zero luck for tech workers. It's the here. but to take on the U.S. government you have to get big gun attorneys. This group, IRLI has big money and big guns and they still lose their cases. It's beyond unreal how courts throw out these cases and frankly I don't see how they throw them out, sure seems political, but individuals trying to go up against the government or even a corporation simply get hung out to dry with legal maneuvering. It's just too expensive.
